. . continue to move us forward to the top of the performance charts” (May 2008, p. 8). This was achieved with external funding. By 2008, the Foundation for Medical Research (FMRI) was established and employed a Health Accountant to ensure that a significant amount of its funding was spent on the health of Ile-Ife Osun State ([@bib26]). In July 2008, the State Government established the Healthy Community Partnership (HCP) to support the activities of the FMRI. The aim of the HCP was to increase demand for and utilisation of preventive health care services by engaging stakeholders in the community through communication. A vibrant and dynamic HCP was established and is still active, with support from the State Government and partners, to ensure that prevention is embedded within the State ([@bib27]). The programme is aligned with the national strategic objectives and work plans for the first 3 years of the NPHRAP. The HCP remains focused on health promotion activities and this includes training and capacity building for health workers in order to improve the quality of health care services provided in the community. The HCP has also set up an Emergency and Disaster Management Unit with over 200 volunteer responders who continue to provide free emergency assistance to residents in Osogbo town through the Osogbo Emergency Care Services (OECS). This unit was set up through a partnership between the State Government, FMRI and Islamic Medical Association of Osogbo. The partnership, which is still active today, has resulted in the Health Hub in Osogbo being very successful ([@bib28]). The State Government created the Osogbo District Health Directorate (ODHD) through a political decision in 2010. The mandate of the ODHD is to provide the required infrastructure and capacity to implement and sustain quality primary health care services in Osogbo town. Another community programme, namely 'Run to the Point' was also developed. The programme was implemented with the support of the FMRI, Osogbo = Onkosi. 'Run to the Point' is the community based programme aimed at increasing the physical activity in the community by setting a series of five checkpoints, each checkpoint with its own designated distance and time. In this programme, teams of runners from different communities in Osogbo town are involved. All of these checkpoints are within the ward of Ifite Osun. 'Run to the Point' was supported with the support of the Federal Ministry of Health and partners
